Müden/Örtze, often lovingly called the “Pearl of the Südheide”, is a true gem waiting to be discovered. Stroll through the picturesque village streets and the typical narrow lanes, known locally as Twieten. A visit should also include the historic water mill, the Köstertwiete, and the St. Laurentius Church.
Built between 1435 and 1438 in the style of a traditional Lower Saxon farmhouse, this watermill has a rich history. After the invention of artificial fertilizer, farmers’ harvests increased significantly, and the original mill could no longer handle the volume of grain. Consequently, the original building was demolished in 1913, and the current mill went into operation in 1916. Today, it is one of the most romantic spots in Müden, and couples can even exchange their vows here.
The mill also houses the local Tourist Information, where you can find tips on interesting places to visit, maps for hiking routes, and other valuable information to make the most of your stay.
The audio walk offers a completely new listening experience, bringing Müden’s 1,000-year history to life as you stroll through the village. Using your smartphone, you can explore the charming heath village at your own pace. The starting point is at the Historic Watermill, right by the Tourist Information.
The Heidschnucken Farm Niederohe was first documented in the 14th century and has remained in the same family ever since. Every day, the Heidschnucken sheep head out into the heath and return in the afternoon. While they were once kept for fertilizer, meat, and wool, today they play an important role in landscape conservation. Without Heidschnucken, there would be no heathlands.
This flock is one of the last original herds in the Lüneburg Heath. Whereas each farm once maintained a flock, there are now only three in the Südheide Nature Park. Across the heath, there used to be around 800,000 animals – today there are only about 15,000 in total.

At Drewes Farm, you’ll find regional and seasonal products, either grown on-site or sourced from other local vendors in the southern Lüneburg Heath.
Around 200 bee colonies at Beekeeper Ahrens gather nectar from a wide variety of sources. The first honeys to be extracted include rapeseed honey, early-bloom honey, and acacia honey. During long-distance excursions across Germany, the apiary also harvests fir honey, buckwheat honey, and sweet chestnut honey.
In the local region, forest honey, blossom honey, and linden honey are produced. Special honey varieties include cornflower honey, heath honey, pressed honey, and honeycomb slices. Visitors on-site can experience the techniques and products firsthand.
A Rich Selection of Sheep Products at Sebandshof
At Sebandshof, you’ll find a wide variety of sheep-related products – from sausages and sheep’s milk soap to woolen goods. Among the animals bred here are Leine sheep, a breed threatened with extinction, as well as goats, Suffolk sheep, and Heidschnucken.
Throughout the year, Sebandshof hosts a range of events, from small summer festivals and art exhibitions to a cozy Christmas market.
As early as 866, a first chapel was reportedly built at the confluence of the Örtze and Wietze rivers on the site of a former pagan Thor sanctuary. Construction of the current building began in 1185. Parts of the original wall crown and the beam supports are still visible inside. In 1217, the chapel was consecrated to the martyr Saint Laurentius.
Directly adjacent to St. Laurentius Church stands an old treppenspeicher (stair storage building), bearing the year 1706 (MDCCVI) above the lower entrance. These storages were used to protect goods from mice and other hazards. Access to the upper floor was via an external staircase, usually attached to the gable side, which gave the building its name.
Nestled in the idyllic Örtze Valley, Wildpark Müden spans over 10 hectares. The mostly native animals are housed in naturalistic enclosures, complete with streams and ponds. On a walk through the park, both young and old can reach the various contact enclosures on their own via short paths, or experience the residents up close during bird shows and feeding sessions.
